oh this well I don't know maybe he has or maybe he hasn't but. It will only get worse if he's not drawing everyday proving to people he can draw and not very eerie look familiar to some manga's.

...Dude. I personally don't know how much you draw, but "coincidences" like the ones used as evidence aren't coincidences. When things overlap nigh perfectly, it isn't an accident. There is no "maybe", especially with so many repeated offenses, so to speak.

I will acknowledge folks who share similar art styles and homages to the works of others that inspired their work, but that's completely different from tracing and getting paid for it.

I saw this news bite the other day, but didn't see the other comparisons. Thanks for the link, it's staggering! Ok, now there's a chance that someone could be inspired retroactively by something they saw in the past and thus create a similar pose and/ or even character design. This...this however is complete and utter bull. It's one thing to trace --and believe me that's terrible as an artist, it completely undermines all you've done, all you hope to do, and tarnishes your image; you cannot be trusted henceforth-- but to even copy the dialogue AND TRACE FAN ART is not only cheap and lazy, but incredibly stupid. He's presenting any legal team with ludicrous amounts of evidence. I mean seriously, when I heard this, I thought he made Rob Liefeld-esque copied character designs and maybe ONE copied panel. There is a substantial amount of stolen material. There's no way on Earth this is a coincidence. In one work of "original" art you will not find, eerily similar character designs, exactly copied moments/situations/ poses, exact replicated panels (to the point that overlays match exactly), AND exactly replicated DIALOG simultaneously!

I spoke with my sister on the issue and she said something along the lines of "This is the internet age, how could he think one person wouldn't notice, tell their friends, have their friends break out their scanners, make some posts and then eventually inform the very internet?"

I can't believe how ridiculous this is.

Whoa, the news is elsewhere too?

I'm not sure if this is the one you're talking about, but I found a link that brought up interesting perspectives:

Note the section on doujinshis and selling fanart at conventions.

Well, I think Simmon's did copy, but reading through some of the other articles, my inner artist started poking at me.

If you see a pose you like, why not draw something similar? If you read a plotline that inspires you, dialogue you particularly like ... why can't you make your own take of it? Directly taking and claiming as your own is wrong, but as your own idol Crispin Freeman says, "Good artists borrow, Great artists steal."
Is it so wrong to be inspired, take an idea, and make it your own? Is it so wrong to tell the same story with a different spin? Half the poses I draw, I wouldn't be inspired to do if I didn't see fashion models in magazines, watch hours of music videos and ballet and ice skating.

I will clarify in Crispin's case that the idea is to steal and make it your own than just steal. As in, my imitation of Angelica from the Rugrats will have my own, personal spin. I can take a picture of something, but I composed the shot based on what I saw and how I interpreted it. That, and using it as a teaching tool a la admiring the works of more skilled performers/artists and measuring your ability to theirs--"Oh THAT'S how she does it!"

=P And it ain't just an interpretation thing; I heard it straight from the horse's mouth.

I also heard straight from the horse's mouth regarding Hayao Miyazaki's take on "what is originality", but that'd make this post more confusing that it'd need to be.

In a nutshell, the way I see it, no harm in being inspired, especially if it's your way of seeing and expressing the experience you're taking in. That's why I don't mind fanart and tributes.

Looking through these links and I have to say, wow, all anime looks the same. I couldn't tell that different shots were from different shows/comics at all.

Haha, most of the examples in the Livejournal link were comparing Simmons's comic to Bleach. The sea of comments point out to the other anime/manga being copied, like Hellsing and One Piece.

Think we know how this will end.

BTW not clicking on that link, knowing it's ED.

EDIT: Thanks to curiosity and hypocrisy, I ended up clicking on it anyway.

That and it's (re)production is quite easy.

You don't see people tracing one of Picasso's work.
