 TomaMoto Serious Demo
« Thread Started on Mar 14, 2008, 7:58pm »

Not really a formal demo that I'm gonna put up on my site or anything. Just, the other day someone mentioned that they thought I only played comedy roles, so I slapped together a bunch of random lines from more serious stuff and made this.

This is merely my proof that I've done serious roles. Whether I'm actually a good serious actor is another question entirely. XP

Note: One line is pitch-edited because the character is a 400 lb lizard-man...

I noticed a lot voices I didn't expect you to pull off. Like whoa.

Not in a bad way, of course. Just shows you've really improved from the last time I've heard from you. 8D

Great stuff. x3

This demo is pretty long. It seems more like a radioplay, but still good.

The audio quality is excellent and the voices are pretty good, but I could tell the voices came from the same person accept for 2 voices one of them is the edited voice. The music should be better (different music for different situations) for it feels kinda plain and doesn't suit the moment.

Also, I would just like to say that it seems too monotone emotion (made it up myself). What I mean by that is, If *Sentence number 1* is suppose to be partially sad you as a monotone emotion person will be sad throughout the whole sentence. (What you should do) Talk normal part of the sentence then bring forth the extra emotion slowly through the sentence. That is what will show a great voice actor/actress.

When you hear a great voice over artist they aren't monotone emotion. They start off normal or partially sad (whatever emotion) and build up more emotion throughout the sentence. Makes it sound more natural

Over all, it is quite a good Demo.

With regard to your first comment, this wasn't really prepared with range in mind, so yeah, you're totally right, the variation was lacking.

In response to the second comment, I don't entirely agree with you. I think the lines that required progressive emotion had it, but I would argue that every line with emotion doesn't necessarily call for that. Sure, it's a necessary technique for believability, but these lines are all taken out of context. So if I've already "gotten mad" for example, it would actually be really silly to "get mad" in each line after that. It would make more sense to just "be mad." No?

But yeah, I would probably use more progressive emotions if I were actually preparing lines for the express purpose of making a serious demo.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing, Toma. The progression does not come with every line. The progression comes with the character's emotion. It may have been possible for TomaMoto to show us this, but his demo would have be much longer and show us a lot more. A few lines at a time can't really show a build. Some, maybe, but overall, they would have to be in whatever emotion they are in since he says a sentence or two and goes to the next clip. Not much time for progress, if you get me.

Nice job, TomaMoto, I liked it. Good stuff.

also, on a different note, while I really liked this demo, there were still a few lines that I found to have a very funny delivery :P But I still understand that comedy is not all you can do. It's good to show all of our dimensions.

I understand what you're saying that each sentence should be like that, but each character had a few lines to say and it seems they all passed the progressive faze. You had enough lines to bring some form of that progressive emotion to show more of a believability.

Also, pronouncing certain words more then others with a tad more emotion helps too.

We humans don't stay on one level of anger or depression. Our level drops then rises again which helps bring that believability.

You could of added in some sort of depressed scene (crying maybe) in the demo as well.

I just didn't hear any of these I mentioned to a good degree.

Well all I can say is that I regret I couldn't dramatically move anyone with any of the various 10 second bits included in this patch-work demo? ...okay, I'm done being a dick now.

Anyway, that I might get something out the criticism, Mystic, which lines were delivered awkwardly? That would actually be most helpful to know.

These professional voiceover artists, did they mix and circulate a bunch of slapped-together, pre-recorded lines, pegging it as a legitimate demo of their best ability?

You mean which ones sounded kind of funny?

Well, "Tell me what to fuckin do" had a funny delivery. The voice was very cartoony. And I'm not sure why, but the "It was 8:11, 3019..." sounded like a parody or a joke to me. It was a good voice, but it kind of stayed on the same level for every word. I do understand that those types of voices are difficult to sustain and manipulate, but when setting a dark mood, taking advantage of pauses would help.

Also, a lot of times you take pretty deep breathes that are heard very strongly over the microphone. It's not that bad, but you might want to practice breathing to eliminate some of that.

Hope that helped out a little. Great job, man. Were these all from stuff you've been in or did you come up with these lines for the demo?

Okay, to be honest, I still don't know why the hell I left "tell me what to fucking do" in there. It actually WAS from a comedy, and now I haven't the slightest idea why I felt the need to include it. The whole 8:11 thing... I was going for like a Fallout thing. Dunno if you've played it but there's this guy at the beginning "War... war never changes." Anywho, that is a tough voice, but I do believe it requires a sort of monotonous approach to give the whole "post-apocalyptic" vibe. That being said, I have yet to perfect it.

And to answer your last question, these were all from stuff I did, and this was arranged pretty quickly just to make a point. That's why I'm losing my patience with silver19, who insists on holding this to the standard of a professional demo reel. If I give someone sirloin and tell them it's sirloin, I assure you I'll get more annoyed each time they remind me it's not filet mignon.

You have to ask them if they believe it to be there best ability or not. They did indeed take pre-recorded lines and put them together like toma did.

So what should I compare this too? The online community of voice acting? Am I not allowed to voice my opinion without people getting annoyed? I gave you a constructive critique and yet it sounds like you and your buddies are complaining about it.

I am not comparing this to a professional demo reel as I know this isn't your true demo reel. When I mentioned the professionals I did it to give you an example of emotions and delivery. The whole topic was about emotion/delivery.

I'm sure you're trying to help. I'm just irritable this week (had a fight with a good friend) and I have a history of taking criticism personally. This is my passion, after all, and yes, on the flipside I should be more eager to improve myself, I know that. I just got frustrated because I didn't feel like the criticism was helpful, but you have said things that are worth keeping in mind, so thanks for that. I apologize for the attitude, silver19.
