 Halo
« Thread Started on Nov 15, 2011, 12:25am »

I'm gonna be honest; I lost interest in the franchise after Halo 2.

The story in the first was decent; a bit slow-moving, but decent. Halo 2 wasn't a MESS, per se, but it wasn't tidy, I'll tell ya that much. And from what I've heard, Halo 3 was just as... "untidy".

Reach was fine, I suppose, but when it came out, I was already bored with the whole Halo thing, story-wise AND supposedly-improved-gameplay-wise...

... the gameplay wasn't all that great...

And now, Halo 4 is coming out.

I don't get it. Everything that needed to be done was done. Earth is saved. The Covenants went away. There is not longer a threat against the universe. For what reason would they need another Halo installment?

... But despite all that, I gotta admit, I am pretty psyched about Anniversary. Call me a fool, but I'll look for any excuse to play a classic. Better graphics? Sure. Why not.

Also, my original Xbox is fried. It's just a door-stop now (literally).

Oh believe me, it makes sense. Know why? Three reasons: $ $ & $. Simple as that. If it's going to make money - which it most definitely will - its going to be made. Besides, it looks like its going to be a new story arc for Master Chief; not just the same Covenant and Flood type story it was before.

Anyway, I actually just started getting into Halo. I downloaded the Xbox Original off XBLA. I decided not to go with Anniversary because a) I wanted an authentic experience and b) because GT gave it something like 8.4, so I think it may have been a downgrade from the original. I gotta say, its the first FPS that I actually am enjoying. Usually, shooters have loose controls I can't get used to. Halo is much more accessible to me.

Halo is the best!

It's a stupid point to make that there's only a lot of Halo because of the $$$. That's whyy there's many games. Why make games if it's not going to make money?

@theatticus: Halo: CEA is the pure Halo experience from 10 years ago. You can play in the old graphics, with the same guns, same sounds, same engine etc. Or you can play in the remastered. The only difference is the sounds and graphics are better, as well as having Skulls and Terminals to find.

@bananabuddy: Yes the "Halo" trilogy is finished, but that story spanned about 6 months of a timeline that spans 100,000 years. Halo 4-6 will be the "Forerunner" trilogy. New enemies. No more Covenant, no more UNSC. Exciting times ahead.

Remakes aren't always great. Especially beat'em-ups like Battletoads. They remade Turtles in Time. I'm glad I didn't buy that piece of shit.

Also, Forerunner trilogy? Sounds iffy.

I gotta admit, though; the development of Halo was pretty kickass. I've enjoyed it more than I enjoyed the actual games.
So much biblical references/allegories and shit, it's unbelievable. And I'm not just talking about the Arc/Flood thing, they get really into it; it must have taken a couple of months just to put all that together. You see it a lot in books, but you don't see that happening very much in video games.
They took that shit pretty seriously, and that deserves some MAJOR appreciation.

Sounds sick. I'm sure Halo rings will be small scale compared other Forerunner technology will be shown throughout Halo 4-6. And in the terminals in Halo: CEA Gulity Spark says something like "..that would mean he would be here too. And if he's here...well...perhaps the humans would prefer to fight the flood instead." and "..if our weapons were ever turned against us, well...long plans indeed". Halo 4 is going to be fun on the bun!

Look at this thing. It's ridiculous. It's blowing my mind.

And I knew that John 117 was supposed to be a Biblical reference himself, but I didn't really know to what extent.

Revelation 1:17-18 (Keep in mind, the author of Revelation was named John)
17. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

18. I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

And all the shit pertaining to the Covenant?

Revelation 11:5-10
5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.

6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over the waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

10 And they that dwell upon the Earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

I'm getting too excited.

I forgot how compelling this was.

Me too, Halo 2 WAS Xbox Live back in the old days. I used to be a modder and I'd host customs for people. I like the H2 campaign better then all the other ones and in my opinion the multiplayer was a lot smoother. Ranking up actually took skill and back then you were considered good if you were rank 25+.
Even though there were a lot of glitches it didn't effect the gameplay too much. I still remember most of the glitches and super jumps were great. I wish they would bring back the clan list, hopefully they do for Halo 4. I got up to rank 33 in team slayer then cheated to rank 44 lolz. I also cheated for my 50 on Halo 3 in MLG like a faggot.

When I first play Halo I try to get my rank up as high as possible for about a week or so then mess around and not care. I like the old MM system and hope they don't make it like Reach so people actually have to have skill and use team work to rank up instead of just play like COD.

There is one thing I do look forward to in the new Halo trilogy.
I'm fond of Cortana. I've always been a fan of the "AI imitating humans" thing. I was, in fact, obsessed with the film "AI" when I saw it. That little kid actor was phenomenal. Seriously. Y'all notice that he hardly blinked? Like, at all, maybe?
Anyways.
I'm surprised Cortana hasn't had an identity crisis. She's an AI construct whose personality and appearance imitates those of her creator, not to mention she's meant to die after 7 years. How would a highly advanced AI construct (programmed to imitate emotional behavior, for some strange reason) resolve her expendable nature?

From what you see in the trailers, it seems as if Cortana has exceeded her lifespan of 7 years, and you see her beginning to go batshit crazy. I wanna see that happen.

For a real appreciation of the Halo universe you really do need to get pretty deep into it. Just playing the games won't give you enough of the story to realize what an interesting world and story arc it actually is. The books, short stories, animated series and all of that fill in many of the gaps that the games leave in the stories and the amalgamation of all of those elements makes for a fantastic overall story.

The biggest reason that Halo was so incredibly successful (aside from the original Xbox marketing leaning very heavily on it) was one crucial part of the game play, the targetting system. Before Halo FPS games were widely considered to only be effectively playable on PCs due to the difficulty in balancing the ability to turn quickly with the precision needed for aiming. Halo accomplished this with a targetting system that allowed the player to turn their character quickly but as soon as the reticule touched an enemy it would slow down just enough to allow precision targetting. There is a slight "sticky" effect when the reticule is on an enemy. Halo was the first FPS to implement this kind of system and it is honestly (aside from the interesting story) what made it such an influential FPS.

I have never been less than satisfied with the Halo games. Some were better than others, some didn't NEED to be made but overall I have never regretted buying a Halo game. Halo 4 is supposed to be the first game in a new trilogy and after watching the trailers, live action clips and game play clips I am very, very excited about it.

Speaking of the expanded universe...

I want to see more Spartans. I've read enough of the books to know that a handful of them survived the events of Reach. It's been a while, but I'm certain Master Chief found some of them, following the events of the first Halo game. Seriously. It kinda bothered me, not seeing them.

In the games, which are realistically the only source of actual Halo lore, other spartans weren't even mentioned until Reach. The books/animes/comics cover stories about other spartans but even in most of those the Masterchief is pretty much the only surviving spartan. The books bring about Spartan III's but very very few of them actually survive because they are designed as throw away weapons.

All of that being said I suspect that IF there are other spartans by the game makers lore they will be kept in reserve until the story reaches a point where Masterchief has to die and they go "but wait, we found this other spartan hiding under a rock!" so they can continue the franchise.
