Podcast: Abridged dramatization of the forthcoming novel "Fledgling".

Actors will be picked for roles on 2/20/2010

Auditioning for multiple roles is encouraged.
Please format the mp3 or wav filenames as: YourName_CharacterName_AuditionLine and place them in a zip file for sending.

Summary:
Rebecka “Beka” Saberhagen found out by accident that Vincent, the owner of the nightclub where she sometimes worked, is a vampire.
That was hard enough for Beka to accept, but when the murders began and everyone gets on edge; Vincent, Lorelei, her brother John, and everyone else at the club.
Beka is attacked by another vampire. As she slowly changes, Vincent has her met her attacker: a "giant" named Steopa. Something has happened to the both of them, that most vampires had only heard about.
Steopa shows Beka how to survive. Why she had to have human blood, what can really kill their kind and why, and what she can still eat. (Although she might not want to.)
But there are other vampires in town, ones that want to make Beka's new life difficult. One is an old enemy of Steopa's. The other is a woman with a male harem. As Beka has runs in with them, she learns that Vincent was keeping more than his vampirism a secret.
There is something buried beneath the nightclub, something that everyone is suddenly interested in. Beka may be a new vampire, but she will protect the people she holds dear. When Steopa decides to confront his enemy, she joins him without question.

Character Bios:
Major characters will appear in most if not all of the scenes. They will have specific audition lines.
Supporting characters will appear in at least two scenes. They will have specific audition lines.
Minor characters appear in one scene, maybe only one line. They don't require audition lines. Improv will be acceptable, but if you can land a Major or Supporting character you may volunteer or be asked to do a minor voice.

Rebecka “Beka” Saberhagen: Twenty-something, self centered, attention seeking, overweight woman that turns into a vampire. American Midwest accent. She is mentally messed up at the beginning of the story. Major character.

"They knew what was going to happen to those children. Just like my mother knew what was happening to me."
"They didn't actually do human sacrifices, did they? I mean, this was, what? Just a hundred years ago? And this is America. I thought we were supposed to be the civilized nation at that time."

Vincent Hugh: Vampire. Owns the Rathskeller, and doesn't have to kill to get his meals. Most are given to him. Bit of a smartass. American accent. Major character.

Audition lines:
"Yeah, Good ole Joshua. He was a strange one. He had a 'select' group of friends and they would meet here."
"Well, well, well. Paulette. I have heard nothing about you."
"That there is one of my friends. This is her first night as one of us and she had to meet you."

John Saberhagen: Beka's brother. Tattooist and DJ. Smart guy, overprotective of Beka. American Midwest accent. Supporting character.

"If you ever hurt my sister, vampire or not, I will kill you."
"I don't know. There are times when it is tempting, but then I watch Vincent. Having to rely on someone else for your meal and protection? That takes the fun out of it."

Lorelei: John's psychic girlfriend. Runs the Rathskeller both bartender and manager. American accent. Supporting character.

"Guys. I got this earlier today. You know the business owner organization I am in. Because of the recent mass murders, they want all businesses to be shut down at eight pm every night. Basically would put this club out of business."
"First, Vincent is a friend. It wasn't always that way. This arrangement was first... It was forced upon John and I. We were still teenagers, for Christ sake."

Andi: College student and waitress. A petite woman, she looks and acts much younger. Sounds like a scatterbrain, but is not. American accent. Supporting character.

"I knew a couple of them were like, um, you. Look, I've been around Vincent enough to spot the real thing."
"You startled me. A vampire now? I heard. Weirdness. Is it really strange?"

Steopa Radovitch: Vampire. Known as “The Giant” Deep voice. Slavic accent. Can be quite frightening, does not mind ripping someone apart if it will get him what he wants. Yet, stays quiet most of the time. Major character.

"There are three dead children, hundreds of thousands are dead in Leningrad, and million are killed in the camps. And you care about those five?"
"Vampires are cruel. We exist to weed out the weak and the unneeded. We feed on humans."
"You could never fight your own battles. You had to hide behind the Nazis, your own troops, and now? Children! No true vampire will let you become our master."

Swen: Bouncer/Biker. Berserk will turn into a bear. Former marine. American accent. Minor character.

"Like the drugs, fights, and shit don't put them in danger already."
"Look, my friend has seen enough in this town, to know that not everyone that dies here, dies due to normal causes. I'm his ear to our side of this town, if you understand,"

Cassie: Swen's girlfriend. Owns the new age/ wiccan shop. Very soft, calming voice. Like the kind that can put you to sleep, in a good way. Minor character.

Audition lines:
"It's been a weird week. Saturday, I had some strange kids come in here and ask me all sort of questions. Just weird questions, about blood magic."

Adrian: Vampire. A “Pretty boy” lacky. American accent. Supporting character.

Audition lines:
"My name is Adrian, but it is not my name you should fear, it's my mistress."
"I got the board out."

Paulette: Vampire. Sounds nice, but is nasty. American accent. Supporting character.

"Oh, nothing. I have been looking for something. I thought maybe you have seen it."
"Would you be so kind to show me the basement?"

Goldie: A stuck up woman Beka almost gets into a fight with. Coke sniffer, club goer. Speaks as if she is verbally slapping others in the face. Fake accent (British, or southern, or switches between them?). Supporting character.

"Liposuction works wonders."
"How did you? Vampires are supposed to be beautiful."

Ogden Phelps: Vampire and mage. Very posh, British gentleman. Upper class British accent. Supporting character.

"But you see my dilemma. I let you in, and then I have to let in the others. Soon my peace will be disturbed."
"This power wants blood. The problem is that it had been getting the wrong kind. Animals would have only held it off for a short time. Human is what it craves."

Teodor Navarro: Werewolf, friend of Steopa. Speaks with some sort of central Europe accent (very subtle) Supporting character.

"I didn't think Steopa would ever bring a date."
"One of the old school types, if he could get away with it he would be in opera capes and castles."

Jalmari: Vampire, slimy. Likes to be in command so he can use the people under him. European accent is undefinable, but he is originally from Finland. Supporting character.

Audition lines:
"This book, is extremely rare. But the information in it is only valuable to the ones that understand it."
"Because all you have to feed on are dying bodies. Come with me, the feast is amazing.."

Baldman: An older male computer hacker. Only hear him through computer speaker. Minor character.

Daisybabe: Female computer hacker, Only hear her through computer speakers. Minor character.

Gerald: Beka and John's step-father, a complete ass. Minor character.

Horror: Bag lady, Southern accent. Minor character.

Raul: Beggar. Might be Hispanic. Minor character.

Female Bartender: bartender at a jock country bar. Minor character.

Frat boys: multiple roles, drunken jocks. Minor characters.

Dorn: Female beggar, Steopa knows her. Seems to know more than she should. Minor character.

Grady: Swen's cop friend. Minor character.

Woman at shop: Russian woman, older, has some sort of arrangement of with Steopa. Minor character.

Russian soliders: Minor characters.

Gangsters: Three of them on the bus. Typical gang members. Minor characters.

Male drug user: Beka's first meal. Minor character.

Ghouls: No dialoge. Monsters that eat corpses. Minor characters.

Woman at polkafest: Minor character.

Multiple male and female parts: For filler, background, or one lines.

You will be asked to make a DropBox account if you are picked for a role. This makes it easier for one to grab the scripts without me having to send out scripts to every voice actor. However, if you cannot read Open Office files I can easily save it in another format to send to you.

Much later in the story (one of the later books) one of the vampires turns into a mist form, gets inside his opponent, solidifies, and explodes his opponent to bits. This is the kind of story you will be dealing with.

tl;dr, I am producing the abridged podcast version of the upcoming novel "Fledgling". I require actors for multiple roles, and I encourage actors to audition for multiple roles. Deadline for auditions is February 19th, and I will finish judging on February 20th. Actors who are picked for a major role may be asked to do a minor voice, or may volunteer to do so. This is a vampire story, there will be blood.
