 Paper Mario-based Radioplay
« Thread Started on May 21, 2010, 11:41am »

Hello Yello.

This Eddy "D3stiny_Sm4sher" Fettig of GoNintendo.com. I'm looking for some voice talent to help me put together a Paper Mario-based radioplay. The project is un-named (as I prefer to name something when it's completed) and I've only just started working on it. It was originally going to be a fanfic but I felt it might work well as a radioplay if I can find a good cast -- I figured I would take a look around and if I can get a cast on board I'll re-write what I have so far and build it as a script rather than a short story. I can't say exactly when this project will be done but if I know I have a solid cast I can write the script to fit the actor's styles. I also will definitely encourage feedback from my cast as far as altering dialogue goes, and even plot elements, etc.

The story will be about college life at the University of Goom (aka U Goom) and will primarily star two Goombas from the Paper Mario games -- I'm writing it as a romance, I guess, but I'm sure other elements will come into play. I tend to write very organically, so I rarely know how things will turn out until I actually WRITE them!

Since nothing is concrete yet (not even the introductory scene, though I have a draft hased out) any audition lines might not even be in the final script but should work for giving you a sense of the character. One of my main goals with this radioplay is to capture the Mario world as the Paper Mario games do: zany and fantastical but with a sense of our modern society blended in. Here are some of the roles I'm looking for. More will likely be added as I develop the plot and script. Also, please don't feel like you need to stick to the script word for word. Roll with it. If you feel like adding something or tweaking something, by all means. I want it to come across as naturally as possible.

Goombario Bonkovsky:
A freshman at U Goom, Goombario is a level-headed kid from a rural hamlet on the outskirts of Toad Toad who tends to be pretty calm and rational and is often treated like a "country boy" despite the travels he's been on. It's difficult to upset or anger him as he's very carefree. He's kind of a nerd but doesn't specifically flaunt his intelligence. He's still not sure what he's going to be majoring in yet.

He tends to be rather reserved, trying best not to let his first impressions of people cloud his mind. He'll often opt to do what's polite and kind even if it's not what he feels like doing. He prefers to maintain peace and order Despite his somewhat inward nature he's very easy to talk to and eager to open up to anyone who strikes up conversation.

"What? Get outta town! You're the teacher's aid? What year are you, then?"

"Oh, me? Heh. Well, I'm just a freshie.

[nervous]
"Erm, sure. I mean, heh, why not? Uhhh, wh-what time? Where should we meet?"

"Oh. Uhhh, yea, I get that a lot, heh. I, uh, yea, I went on some travels with him myself, a few years back. Saved the Honorable Star Spirits, defeated King Bowser...ya know. No big."

"Ohhh come ON, Bella. A little fun never hurt anyone."

"Whoa-whoa-whoa, HEY. Let's just...calm down for a second here, huh? Just take it easy."

Goombella Gomez:
A senior at U Goom, Goombella, better known as "Bella" by her peers and associates, is studying to be an archaeologist and historian, and is the prized pupil of Professor Kolorado, who has taken a personal investment in her as his teacher's aid and protege. She is a strange girl who often wears a tie and expedition helmet on a regular basis, amongst other odd tendencies. She tends to speak her mind very bluntly and sometimes callously, making snap judgments which she'll later revise when he sees the error of her ways. Many boys on campus find her to be very physically attractive but her oddball personality and slight neuroticism tend to keep most at bay from even trying to date her.

She's short-tempered but also very outgoing and friendly. She wears her heart on her metaphorical sleeve, making no effort to hide her feelings to anyone. While she could be interpreted as having a bit of valley girl accent, I like to think that while she can have a peppy spring to her verbal step, she's no ditz, she's just energetic.

[melancholic]
"My mom always said that only hard work brings happiness...You think that's true?"

"Really? That's, like, SUCH a coincidence! Me, too! Seriously! We, like, went all OVER the place. We went to the freakin' MOON, even. Only it wasn't Spirits, we had to save the Crystal Stars so we could defeat this thousand year-old DEMON queen. But I mean...pff! It's no biggie. Who HASN'T helped save the Princess by now, am I right?"

[empathetic]
"Awww...I'm...so sorry. Dang. I just--I don't know what to say, Kiddo..."

[angry]
"Um, EXCUSE me? What did you just say? Did you REALLY just say that? Hey, don't turn your back on--HEY! I'm talking to you!"

Tudley Thwompson:
Goombario's roommate, he generally goes by the name "Tudz." A gray-shelled Koopa from Sarasaland, he's a bit of a stereotypical frat boy who has little interest in studying and simply wants to party it up and enjoy his college life. He tries to force his "macho man" opinions on Goombario, but to little avail.

"Bella Gomez? You asked BELLA GOMEZ on a date? You crazy, dude?"

"Pff, whatever, man. Coffee is TOTALLY a date."

"Braw, girl's crazier than a Banzai Bill. But damn, that's one fine shroom. For reals, she's the full package deal, man. A rare breed, dude, a RARE breed. Fifty-percent nerd, fifty-percent babe, one-hundred-percent hotness."

Gale Vaspers:
Bella's roommate, Gale is an often light-headed Boo in her Junior year with a faint orange complexion whose family resides in Gusty Gulch. She probably talks with a little bit of a southern drawl, but not overly so. Then again, maybe she doesn't. Either way, she's a bit stingy with the people she spends her time with, caring a great deal about her status. At least at first, she's very disapproving of Bella's interest in Goombario.

"But-but Bella! Buck teeth. He has...BUCK TEETH. Are you into that kinda thing or somethin'? The whole...farmer bumpkin stuff?"

"Oh, don't even give me that. He's completely unrefined. I thought you've been waiting around for a proper gentleman."

"Oh, I see it now. You're a cradle robber. That's it. Ow! OW! Hey, ow! I'm just--I'm just KIDDING, Bella, GEEZ."

Professor Frankly:
A retired professor of U Goom who passed the torch to Professor Kolorado, Professor Francis "Frankly" Goomstein is a well-respected figure on campus by students and faculty alike, having only recently retired. He's currently on a lecture circuit across the world, giving speeches on all manners of topics, and has finally stopped by his home town

"She certainly is a bright one, that Gomez girl. One of my star pupils. A bit of an attitude at times, but we all have our faults, don't we?"

"Another expedition, you say? Please, do keep me posted. I'm not sure my old bones could take the journey but I'm sure I could be of some assistance."

"How's that wife of yours going to take it? Always the worrywort, that Jane. I still remember the old days when she'd have to pry you from fist fights you'd blindly jump into for the sake of 'honor.' Haha. You've hardly changed, my boy."

Professor Kolorado:
(This is the one role I might actually take up myself as I LOVE this character and his silly British accent, but if I find someone who can play the role in a way I really like, by all means, I'd step down for them to take up the mantle.)

Professor Kolorado teaches history and archaeology at U Goom, having been a student of Frankly's in his younger years. He resides in the simple, rural town of Koopa Village, near Toad Town, where his wife constantly worries if he'll end up home or off on some addle-brained excavation. He's brave and confident, but in an absent-minded way, throwing himself at danger only to get himself hurt in the process. He's passionate about his teaching and his work but can let that passion get in the way of other important things. He tends to speak a bit quickly and can ramble at times -- his British accent is a staple to his character and must be upheld in this role.

"Hmmm. Bit of a sticky wicket, eh, old bean?"

"Ah, yes. Quite right. Quite right. We mustn't act too hastily, hm?"

"Aha, mm, yes, Ms. Gomez. Splendid work, really. Splendid, indeed. I knew you were the right choice for the job. Smashing, Darling."

Professor Ludwig Von Kooparius:
Having generally outgrown his father's childish ambitions for conquering kingdoms and kidnapping princesses, Ludwig Von Kooparius, the eldest of the infamous "Koopa Kids," is no longer a child but a young adult who has found his way as a musical professor at Goom University. His teaching style is dire and serious but so much so that his students don't take him very seriously at all. He may or may not have a German-style accent. While he likely wouldn't develop one through his upbringing, he might be crazy enough to develop one on his own just for the sake of it.

"Well, well! Look who decided to show up to class! You're late -- AGAIN. Take your seat."

"No no no NO! All wrong. ALL WRONG! You're playing but you're not PLAYING. Where's the soul, the spirit?"

Podley [Pahd-lee]:
A somewhat elderly bartender from the Beanbean Kingdom, Podley opened a quaint little bar and inn that serves cola and coffee in Rogueport. He's been running it for quite some while now and knows the town and its people quite well. He's a courteous, empathetic gent who separated from the love of his life due to some unfortunate circumstances. While he can be cheerful and welcoming, there's a sense of melancholy and longing about him.

"Welcome to you and yours! This is Podley's Place, a humble little cola shop where folks mix stories and drinks.”

"Ah, Miss Gomez. It's been quite some time, hasn't it, little lady? How's school coming along?"

"Take it from experience, Bella: don't let that fellow go. He's a keeper, that one. Don't make the same mistake I did."

---

DEADLINE HAS BEEN MOVED TO JULY 30TH.

I'm sure there will be more roles than this in the end but I need to start penning a formal script. It'd be nice to get this project done by the end of summer, if possible.

Please e-mail me at D3stiny.Sm4sher (at) gmail.com with the subject line "Paper Mario Radioplay" if interested. Please submit auditions in MP3 or WAV format, or via some streaming method.

Also, to help me stay organized, please format your filenames as such:
YourName_CharacterName_#

For example:
D3stinySm4sher_Kolorado_01
ConVito_Goombario_04

I like placing these in a playlist so it'll help me keep them all in order when I'm listening to them. =)

Good luck and later days~

Thanks to everyone who's sent in auditions so far! Every male character except Kolorado has at least one audition in (and that's fine with me 'cuz I'd love to do Kolorado, anyways) but not a single girl has submitted anything. So hopefully that will happen soon! xD I will give these a listen soon.

I am very interested. Are we allowed to audition for more than one part, and then if necessary choose one part to record exclusively?

@TheDude
Oh, yes, totally. Most people have actually auditioned for more than one role, which is great.
So far most people who've auditioned I can picture playing one role well. As more people audition I might have to weed things out, obviously...

But the main problem right now is that no girls have auditioned! xD

That is indeed a large problem, lol.

Unfortunately, I got a relatively deep voice, and what high pitched voice I do have I reserve for singing Don't Stop Believing on expert on Rock Band (my pet rabbits get freaked out, my dog will start yelping in fear, and I'll get 98%, lol).

I'll see to it I can hopefully send in an audition this weekend.

Yea, I mean, we've got some solid parts for the guys but not even a single audition for either female part, and there'd likely be more parts by the time I start writing stuff out.

Thanks for the submission. Still wary that there hasn't been a single girl try out for anything yet, though...=_=
