[MOD] The Last Days - (CLOSED)
« Thread Started on Feb 26, 2012, 5:31pm »

The Last Days of the Third Age

TLD is a total conversion modification of the popular indie RPG called Mount and Blade.

http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-last-days

It's set in J.R.R.Tolkien's Middle Earth and allows the player to take part in the war of the Ring.

As a freelancing artist I'm not quite comfortable with offering "exposure", but the mod is rather popular - we won 8th place in last years' Mod of the Year awards. For a small game like Mount and Blade that's quite an achievement.
If that's important to you, rest assured you'll be heard by many many people. ;) (and of course properly credited)

The deadline for auditions is 15th of March. (if it's not against the rules, I might extend it in case we don't get any voice actors interested)

What we need:

1) Short punchy battle cries for all the various types of men, elves, dwarves and orcs there are in Middle Earth.
They're lines the characters shout in battle and they (potentially) enhance the atmosphere of the game. Immersion is one of our main aims, so we want to improve upon the quality of battle cries we already have. (which were recorded by various fans of the game)

example of the battle cries in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC6Q-jEsCBI

2) A narrator for mini-cinematics explaining what happens after the player achieves something important.

Here's a trailer made for the mod by me, narrated by our composer (sounding rather soar-throated :)):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n4JZEtpipg

What type of roles these are:

1) Not much in range of emotions here I'm afraid. Still, doing these right is a challenge - they need to sound natural (don't be afraid to literally shout, that's what the characters do to bring up their courage) and the pronunciation is often quite difficult. We can provide samples of some of the better old war cries to show what dynamics and intensity we're looking for.

2) Your typical fantasy movie/game narration. We'd like to avoid unnecessary pathos and it's not important to imitate Galadriel's voice over from the LOTR movies. (although her, Gandalf's and Elrond's voices are very good examples of what we're looking for)
What's important is proper pronunciation and that "storytelling" quality. We want to hear depth, moving of the world and fate of the character slowly approaching.

Sample lines:

1) These need to be fairly short, not even full sentences - because they're used by many characters at the same time and it can get really quite murmurry.

I'd like to stress that pronunciation of these names is crucial. We understand this might be difficult for English speakers, as it's quite different to what they're used to. It's no biggie, we can work on that.

Still, if you'd like to know a bit about it in advance, here are two guides I quickly googled (I'm sure there are others):

http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?345465-LOTRO-Names-Pronunciation-Guide
http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Names_in_Middle-Earth

In general it's better not to trust the movies, the only one who pronounces everything correctly is Christopher Lee as Saruman. Ian McKellen as Gandalf gets it mostly right.

We're looking primarily for male voices, but if we get a great sounding lady warrior, we'll be happy to have her on board!
Age doesn't matter that much, but generally 20 - 60 I suppose.

(no need to do all of these, choose whichever culture feels best)

Gondor:
(the Gondorians are proud people with an ancient past, great builders of stone cities and trained disciplined soldiers. Neutral accent would be best, possibly a British one, sort of how Greeks and Romans are portrayed in historical films)

"Gondor!"
"Faramir!"
"Boromir!"
"Ecthelion!"
"Minas Tirith!"
"Dol Amroth!"

Rohan:
(The Rohirrim are a warrior culture, tied to historical Anglo Saxons, so stretch your Old English muscles here. :))

"Forth Eorlingas!"
"Théoden and the Mark!"
"Edoras and the Mark!"
"For Théoden!"
"Helm Hammerhand!"
"Théodred!"

Elves:
This is the truly challenging stuff. How do you voice these immortal beings?
I strongly recommend listening to Tolkien himself:

Also this lady is pretty good too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6XnzglBjxc

"Aurë entuluva!" ("Day will come again.")
"Auta i lóme!" ("The night is passing.")
"Aiya Elenion Ancalima!" ("Hail, Brightest of Stars.")
"For Galadriel!"
"Maetho 'nin gurth!" ("Fight to the death!")

Dwarves:
(Strong deep voiced male here please! Keep in mind that Khuzdul is similar to Semitic languages, so the ability to pronounce Arabic or Yidish will come in handy. Refer to one of the guides for pronunciation, this is tricky in a different way to the elvish languages.)

"Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!" ("Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!")
"Dain!"
"Thorin!"
"Sigin-tarag ai-mênu!" (Long Beards are upon you!)

Orcs:
(Refer to the movies and see if you can get close to that level of ruggedness. We can do some of that in post production, but it's good to start with some orcishness:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anKcxwyRCu8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps1_927oEZg&feature=related
)

"Death to men!"
"Fresh meat!"
"Pushdug Tark-glob!" ("Dungfilth man-fool!")
"Ghash agh Burzum!" ("Fire and darkness!")

There are also Haradrim and the Easterlings - if you're interested in doing something exotic and eastern/southern, let me know. I don't have the lines with me and this post is already getting pretty long. We also have some other mannish factions - if you can do Gondor or Rohan, you can do the Beornings too.

2) The narrator role can be both male and female, we really don't prefer either. If you're good, you get it. :) These will be actual descriptive sentences, not just warcries, so more space for acting.

"War in the north is ended. Men of Dale, Beornings and Woodmen, dwarves from the Lonely Mountain and elves of Mirkwood, Lothlórien and Rivendell are marching south. Their victory has been paid for with steel and blood of many kinsmen."

Samples need not be cut into pieces, although some processing (noise removal and so on) would be nice.

We'd prefer if you sent us links to Sound Cloud or something similar, but mp3 attachments will do as well.

Please, send them to this e-mail: tldrecruitment@gmail.com

Thanks for reading! We're very much looking forwards to your auditions!

(and I'd like to apologize for any mistakes, English is not my native language.)
