A pop filter can handle a lot of it, but it couldn't catch everything. I'd get pretty close to achieve some proximity effect, but putting it close enough until I can lick it like an ice cream cone seems a bit excessive. Not to mention you could completely ruin the delicate electronics inside the microphone with the moisture in your breath. Rusty microphones are broken microphones.

Also, according to the post near the bottom of this page on the Newgrounds VAC thread, our official title is "Voicer".

http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic.php?id=207423&page=431

So from now on I'm "Voicer Omahdon". XD

Incidentally, VoicerDane just joined the VAC. Perhaps he will teach us more about voice acting. ^_^;;

I realize I am new here, and people probably don't care what I have to say, and I was too lazy to check and see if someone had already posted this, but...I've been in radio for 14 years, so:

Quote:
-Don't overemphasize your consonants - this often creates what is referred to as a "pop". Also, watch out for hissing "s" sounds and breath huffs that tend to occur on certain words. Some people put tissue or pantyhose over the mic. Your best bet, however, if you become serious about voice acting, is to invest in a pop screen. They generally cost about $20 and can be ordered from online music stores. You can also look for sites that show you how to make your own using pantyhose and a coat hanger.

You can also turn the mic sideways and lower it so you are speaking over it, thus allowing the popping Ps and heavy breaths to go over rather than directly into it. It doesn't always work, but if you can't find some way to make or purchase a windscreen, give it a shot.

Also, the general rule for mic distance form mouth is to hold your hand up with your fingers slightly apart. Your mouth should be at the tip of your thumb with the mic at the tip of your pinky. Don't stretch your hand as far as you can, but don't let your fingers be too close, either. Just a nice, relaxed, open-handed shape.

Of course, depending on you and your mic, this might not be the ideal.

Thank you for these tips. Also, on another thread, you gave advice as to what mics work best, and for that I say thank you as well. Keep up the great work, and amazing advice. =D

I have a question about mics. I was thinking about getting one of the Logitec USB Desktop Mics for about 20 bucks. I've heard that it can be really clear, and I tested it out on Audacity one time (very good). I'm just saying, should I start off with a cheap mic to see if I could make it in voicing?

At least for voice acting. Most mics are a lot better suited to that task.

When crediting me, please spell the name with both "t"s. "Kyle Garrett". Normally I wouldn't point it out, but it is misspelled frequently enough that it has become a pet peeve of mine.

Well, I have a superlow budget... almost non-existent... So what would you reccommend?

a good priced online voice acting mic is the Samson CO1U. You can find a good package deal with the mic, desktop mount, and shock mount without having to spent much over a hundred bucks.

Many VAC users use it, and it does well for AVA.

The biggest piece of advice I can think of is this:

Don't worry about the sound. A voice will come if you have the right character. Make it physical, identify the emotion behind the message you want to send the audience and a voice will come from that. If you think about it, you'll probably lose it, so don't get in your head. Just recognize the things which you need to identify with and run with it.
