Attn Producers: Regarding fairness. « Thread Started on Dec 17, 2008, 7:36pm »
This has been happening quite a bit lately with flash and especially machinimas (I love you machinimators, so I'm not trying to single you out, but... it's been happening almost 50% of the time.) It's not just me; I've talked to other voice actors and they've said this has happened to them too, so I'd like to draw attention to what I consider an extremely unfair and unprofessional practice.
When you offer someone a role, YOU ARE GIVING THAT ROLE TO THEM. If it is an audition, you need to make it that clear. If you're not really sure you want this VA to play this part, then don't offer it to them until you're sure.
There is hardly anything more insulting than being given a role, accepting, and then being told "Oh I changed my mind, I think I like someone else better." Especially if you already spent your time recording the lines.
Now, recasting is acceptable if your VA ignores deadlines or is unavailable for some reason, but I want to make it clear that it is hideously unacceptable to offer someone a role, and then when they accept, or worse yet, do the lines, tell them you want somebody else. Just.. no.

1) HELL YEAH. Pointing fingers ain't my thing and I do have to say, I got really miffed when people PM'd me, offering roles, only for me to find out later that there's an audition thread still in progress. It makes me cringe... And die inside.
2) Let's see how many producers actually see this... If anything, a mass PM with an additional message tacked on at the end would've been more in-yer-face than a post people will likely miss, but let's see how this goes...

This is a good reference to use for producers who don't know what it means when they are offering someone a role or just requesting for them to audition. Thanks for clearing it up, you two.

oo; Hope you don't mind me moving this to a place where it'll be more visible~ Less likely to be buried beneath VAing discussions since it's a news-ish, forum-related matter.

I haven't had a chance to experience this yet, so I wouldn't know, but it sounds like it would be heartbreaking and annoying, thanks for posting this Rina.

I think we should add a "withdrawment penalty" clause.
If a producer thinks that changing the cast would especially improve the quality of a production then they are allowed to cancel a cast member for a small $20 fee. Sent via paypal to the VA.
I'm actually adding that to my contract... my... unwritten contract that I use in all my VA projects. Which I'm going to backdate.

so...
now some of you owe me $20 bucks..
Genius.
All I need to do is get my damn PayPal unlocked. >_<

So wait, what about us who have no paypal or money to blow. xD Not saying I would do this, but why?!

Ryu, your avvy screws me over every time. I keep thinking you're Gotham.
Anyway, I severely doubt that's what this is about. You recast because someone's not turning in lines. An unfair producer would recast on their own whim through no fault of the VA.

Ryu, I think they're joking about the $20 thing.
Also, yah, what Rina's talking about is NOT people who recast after months of waiting. She's talking about people who, days after they cast someone turn around and say "you know what, I changed my mind."
To the producers in question, changed mind or not, when you offer a role to someone its theirs unless they prove unreliable. I'd suggest in general just more care be taken in casting. You don't have to have a cast list up the day auditions close, you know. And if auditions are still open, well, just keep them open and wait until they close to make your final decision! Because it's not a decision you can easily retract without hurt feelings and a major mark on your reputation.
Also, is this forum really checked that often? I feel like the producers in question are those less likely to care about the rules forum, but that's just me. Wouldn't this be more noticeable as a sticky in the audition forum?

Hmm, Rina, is there a way to make some sort of mass PM sent to all the members so that it manages to reach them? Gale brings up a good point of how the fellas in question might skip this.
