So I don't know anything about making or running a forum, but I was wondering if there was any possibility of implementing email notifications for replies to threads.
The usual response is something about how much we'd be swarmed with emails and how it wouldn't work, but consider this. 1, you subscribe to threads you want notifications from. 2, you only get one email even if there have been lots of replies to that thread. And 3, this is nothing new; lots of forums do it.
For someone who visits lots of different forums, email notifications are a necessity. It's tremendously difficult to track down every thread you've posted in on every forum to see if there have been replies. And I know there's a bookmark option, but that's not really the same.

See the [Bookmark] button next to the [Search] button in a thread~? That's Proboards's "Subscribe"~
You can manage them by going to your [Profile], where you'll see [Bookmarks], and the rest is self-explanatory~
[EDIT]: So you already know about bookmarks, eh? I'll have you know that yeah, I use a subscribe-thingy on another board (vBulletin) and I do prefer having control over how many emails I get from a single thread during a certain time period, but unless you know of some codes, I can't really think of a way to fix it unless the resident code monkey on our mod squad comes up with something.

I actually bookmarked this thread after making it. Didn't help me reply speedily now did it?
It's not so convenient to have to go to the site, go to my profile, and then go to my bookmark section just to find that there actually haven't been any replies after all.
The way email notifications work on most forums is you only get one notification per thread. Ever. There could be a hundred replies spanned over a year, and you won't get any more notifications. You'll only get another notification once you look at the thread again and someone replies to it afterwards.
Another nice thing to have is a setting on my profile that automatically subscribes me to every thread I post in. If I forget to bookmark a thread, I may never remember to visit it again.
Sorry, I don't mean to sound critical or anything. I just gotta bring this up for any forum I post in that doesn't have it. And I discovered a private message from 2 years ago that I never saw because I never got a notification in my email.
Anyway, thanks for the reply.

My only question is, does ProBoards support this? If it doesn't then, well, other than revamping the whole site, and changing the URL to the new host, I don't know how to get that to work.

Scythe. You didn't read my post or try things out thoroughly, didja? [Profile] > [Bookmarks] > [Manage Bookmarks] > [set notification type to PM, email, whatever]
But hey, I understand if the system isn't working as fast as it's preferred. After all, I mentioned it in my post.
The point I'm making that Aramek also made clear is... You can make a suggestion, but it's not much good if it can't be done, now would it? It's like saying "World peace is a GREAT idea! Why ain't it done yet?" and getting the reply "Do YOU know how to make it possible?"

in terms of our carrier supporting certain features... no Proboards does not support email notifications. however some smart Javascripters do come up with workarounds for stuff like this. I'll explore this avenue soon and get back to ya'll

If it doesn't support email notifications, then how come there's an option to receive email notifcations in the manage bookmarks page? Are you just talking about notifications for like PM's and stuff?
And I read your post, but no I didn't try things out thoroughly. I did now, though.
