Round 1: We had to go up and read a monologue that was about a minute in length. This was make it or break it, essentially. If your monologue didn't show that you could act to the best of your ability, you didn't move on. A lot of people chose really generic pieces from a few anime, a few did shakespeare (GOOD.) and a few did some original pieces, the last of which I chose to do (same note, I was the LAST person to go up.)
Round 2: The 7 that made it went up on stage, and we were given print-outs of T'was the Night Before Christmas to read off of. Basically, every four lines we switched to a different person. Every two lines, a different voice was used. It cycled through 14 rounds, so each of us got to go twice, doing 2 voices each time, and a total for 4 different characters for all 7 of us by the end of it. Tom Wayland kept us on our feet and threw the most random, bizarre voice types for all of us to immitate. It was really fast-paced and challenging, a good excercise actually. Mine included Captain Kirk, a stoned surfer-dude, a drill sargent and a french guy...which I totally bastardized XD;
(Side Note: Crystal, the other winner, had to do the Queen of England and a woman giving birth before that, which was fucking hysterical.)
Round 3: Dubbing to picture, but a VERY hard version of such. We viewed a scene in english twice (from a Boxing anime Tom and Mike worked on together) and then did all of our lines in a row, no breaks and no beeps to cue us up, we just fuckin' went for it. Everyone did a good job, actually, so I didn't know what to expect in the outcome. The thing was that, because of the way the process was set up, they didn't care about matching the flaps, they just cared about our acting, which was why me and Crystal ended up winning apparantly!
I see... although I'm sure the process isn't the exact same for every type of this competition, this is DEFINITELY helpful to know for anyone here who ever finds themselves with a similar opportunity to make it big-time. Thanks so much for the info!

Thanks guys :]
The monologue choice and delivery is VERY tricky. You'd be very surprised with how it works most of the time, actually. Crystal's monologue was written originally, but it was basically Naruto giving the evening news XD; Normally you'd think "OH THAT'S LAME, WHATEVER" but the point was that it showed energy and good acting within a good time limit. There were plenty of good ones in there.

Crystal goes by "Morningstar Smiles" on the VAA if any of you guys recognize her. She's new but decently well known I believe. Did a damn good job, too!

Guys, don't take this the wrong way, I'm grateful and all, but I'm not at any sort of "level" to achieve. To be perfectly honest, this is probably just going to be the ONE job, and that'll be the end of it. I don't have an officially-made GOOD demo reel, nor is becoming a voice actor my primary goal in life. I LOVE doing it and I love the aspect and craft of it because to me it's one of the funnest parts of the animation process. However, I've only attained the "wet dream" of everyone that goes to forums like this and the VAA, I haven't actually "lived the dream" of making it into a full career. That, and there are plenty of people on this forum alone that are better than I am. So while I appreciate all of the congrats from you guys, don't read into this too far.
