I'd rather have an expensive mic, then mod it to use cheaper tubes than have a cheap mic with cheap tubes. =/ Ya know? ;O
Yeah, I totally agree with that. And that is partially the dilemma I'm in . . . how expensive of a mic do I want to HAVE (vs. need .. booo).
My "have" side has REALLY been trying to convince my "need" side to drop some money on a more mature sounding capsule. If I was doing VA for a living, then it would totally be an investment.
But at this stage of the game, there's still the off chance I could be in a production trading dialogue with someone else who's using an effing RockBand mic. So an expensive mic doesn't really make sense.
Doesn't make sense, but still ... I want to HAVE. Dammit.
In the meantime, I think I need a lesson on eq-ing my sibilance problem. My new pre (a used, modded Safe Sound P1) is very clean and my esses seem to stick out more with it.

De-esser: I do. I use Spitfish mostly. But I'd like to see if I'd get better results eq-ing it myself. It's a new issue, so I haven't gotten around to checking out online tutorials yet.
Mic: In your situation, a nice mic locker would pretty much be a necessity, right? So it make sense. In my case, it doesn't really make sense for me to have a pricey one . . . but it may not stop me anyway since the more I learn, the more I appreciate . . . and then the more I WANT. Doh!
Oh, this mic is so beautiful, and has an almost Ribbon Mic-like Tonality to it, and when I put it on bi-polar pattern, it is as close to a ribbon mic as one can get.
The true secret to my voice quality is in my EQing and the built in pad in my NT2-A. It lets me actually act into my mic with no penalties from peaking or other things lesser mics suffer from.

I've noticed on other forums that everyone who has an NT2-A always recommends it to others. I'd love to try one out sometime.
I'm currently using an Advanced Audio CM-87. It wasn't designed as a clone of the U87, but as a lower cost alternative which could produce a similar result. Like the R0DE, it does a great job with high SPLs.

Meh, I just like the on-board electronics on the NT2-A

My biggest obstacle is my editing. I run mine, XLR, into the preamp, and, because my tower's soundcard being awful, into a USB external, finally into the computer.
There is a *slight* lag because of the USB when singing, but, I just have to drag the wave a quarter of a second to the left is all. But, yeah, the soundwave editing is the worst. Other than that, I'm happy with my setup, I sound really freakin' warm, and there isn't much cleanup required.

Did you try out that ASIO4ALL software? Seemed to help me when I was running direct into an Asus desktop soundcard.
I'll probably never buy it, but if I made a living doing voice over and had to do it while travelling with a laptop sometimes, this would be what I would get.

Recording delay can be fixed with better drivers (ASIO4ALL) OR by decreasing your buffer size. Sure your cpu will run slower while recording, but you aren't doing anything else with your computer when you're recording anyway, right?
Just make sure everything else is closed at the time of recording.

New mic ... just came in the mail today. These things are freakin' hard to find as they only get released five at a time. Will try it out tonight . .
EDIT: Hmm . . . this mic gets awesome reviews, but after playing with it last night, I think my AA CM-87 still sounds better. I think this CM-6 is more suited to vocals than voice acting/voice over. Dang it.

No, I have an actual gaming computer I use in my room. I have that one, an HP workhorse model, just for the boof. It, being a store-bought computer, has a bad video card in it, but a great processor and a lot of RAM, so, audio editing, ahoy!

That's a gorgeous setup, Aramek. Makes me wish I had an accessible walk-in closet. When I househunt in Portland, a walk-in closet will be the absolute deal breaker for me.
