| | Do you write your practice material? « Thread Started on Feb 13, 2012, 4:11pm » | |
So, I'm uber-new and all. I'm toying around with my mic and Audacity, trying to figure out enough of the switches so I can make decent-quality recordings. I find that when I toy around with demo reels, I like to write my own stuff. It doesn't have to be great, it can even be a rip-off, but it has to have something of mine in it.
Does anyone else feel like that? Do you enjoy writing your own dialogue, just for practice?

I do not enjoy writing. Improvising on what someone else wrote, seems to work better for me. Reading online comics, or magazine articles or these forums is good for practice.

It's great to work on all sorts of copy, written by you or someone else.
Because I'm a screenwriting major, I often end up writing down scraps of dialogue whenever I'm inspired by something, out of habit.
But more often than that, since I can't write things down in the shower, I just do free-form improv and create characters for the sake of creating/exercising my imagination--Who is the character, where is she, what just happened, and what's her response? If the spontaneous monologue is still fresh and interesting long after I left the shower or by the time I have some place to write down the monologue, I perform it.
http://hnilmik.newgrounds.com/audio/ "Riley", "I will write your paper", and "Bioshock - Baby Jane Time" are examples of improv turned into writing turned into a performance... "Oh Boy, I Got An Audition!" and "Best Voice Actress Evar Tips!!" were completely improv'd in front of the mic because I lost my mind during finals and stuff like that.
It's REALLY good exercise~
