I don't actually voice act (except as examples for my projects) but I do want to get a Samson C03U for sound effects recording and other stuff (That might include vocals). Does anyone have both a C03U and an old non USB mic that they can record examples with? I would love to hear the difference.

That's, like, illegal! Only not really.

I just use a Labtec desktop mic. It works, so I've nothing to complain about.

I'll be getting a C01U for Christmas; I'll post the difference in quality after I get it all set up.

I have always said a cheap $20 AUS mic. But I took the liberty and work to look at the side of the mic and it is a Sony F-V120. But I too will by getting a C01U mic for christmas. I can't wait.

I've had a C01U on order since early November and it STILL hasn't arrived. Meanwhile, my mic stand with shock mount and pop filter look mighty lonely and sad. If an inanimate object could have a sad smiley face, this one has it.
That said, I'm starting to wonder if my purchase wasn't completely foolish and that I should have stuck to a traditional analogue mic. I mean, I do have the grunty soundcard for it, afterall.

Yeah I have the tendancy to kill any headsets I have, but my mics almost always last regardless. I have a cheap 15 dollar karaoke mic from superstore that i was using, but right now I'm using my logitech headset......which is almost broken entirely. Problem is that since I used a condenser awhile back I've been spoiled to the crappy ones I'm using now. oh well.

I'd recommend a dedicated preamp for an XLR-based LDC mic.
As for the C01U, it's okay so long as you're not expecting much. There are noise issues and the big killer for me with it was latency.
Not much of an issue for basic home recording, but for anything else (podcasting at a std level, ADR, tracked vocals, etc.) you'll want to step up a bit.
And in reference to another poster in this thread... it may record in stereo, but it is not a stereo mic. Click the button all you want, but all you're recording is a mono signal.
I'll just choose two mics (one on the lower end, and a higher end mic) that I like for VO.
R0de NT-1A. The current version being made in AU is wonderful for most generic uses and has a nice tone when used through most low/mid-range preamps. For what you get and how well it works, the price is well worth it ($199).
On the higher end, there's a lot for me to choose from, but I'll go with an old classic. The U67 is a bit of an oddity from the Neumann line since it used a different type of transformer and element that would eventually be used as the basis for the U87, one of the predominant microphones in modern recording history. While not as hyped in the midrange as the U87 (which gives it the distinctive "Neumann sound" that has been used in countless VO and professional recordings), the U67 was able to capture a warmth to most vocals without creating noticeable distortation that are often encountered with LDC mics in the upper ranges. A good U67 will run you about $5500.

My Logitech headphones have a microphone built into them. Took me a bit to learn how to turn the microphone on.

right click the speaker on your toolbar. then open up the volume control. look for microphone. modify it or whatever. that might help.
