I'm in this boat with not quite calling one's self a brony. Didn't know there were quite so many like that. I do post on a forum related to the show, and heck, I've made a bunch of comics off of it, and Gmod videos relating to it. I definitely really like it, and will continue to watch it.
But I completely agree about the cuteness sometimes being too much. Not that I'd want them to change it for the sake of their older viewers - either way, I think the show gets most of its merit out of being quotable, memorable, and inspiring lots of other creation. When you spend a long time in the fandom and looking at its best clips, it almost feels a bit slow-paced when you go finish that, and go back to watching a 22-minute episode straight through. ("Wow, they stretched that joke way too far...")
I do think that anyone should be impressed at the songs they've had in the second season though; many of them feel straight out of a musical, or a good Disney movie.
And yeah, at least half of the episodes are not the kind I would recommend to newcomers. A few off the top of my head I think are fun to watch when seeing it for the first time:
Bridle Gossip (in which the yellow-and-pink pony is voiced by a tall, black man) Feeling Pinkie Keen (in which Twilight is on the receiving end of much Looney Tunes slapstick) The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 (an episode devoted to producing alcohol right under a TV-Y rating; features the series' only male-lead song, and one of the best) Read It And Weep (an allegorical look at what it's like to become a brony) Lesson Zero (the day it came out, the fans didn't know WHICH clip to parodize or take out of context the most)

I've watched a couple of episodes in the first season. I haven't watched the show since. Not that it isn't a good show, because it is.
I can appreciate the factors that make it so good. To me, that's all I really get from it. I can't say I really enjoy any of it. Maybe I'll see a decision that makes me chuckle, but beyond that, it doesn't really do much for me.
To be honest, I'm still amazed at how popular the show has become. There are plenty of great shows out there directed at kids, yet this one sticks out. Symbionic Titan was a WONDERFUL show. The art was amazing (much like it was on Samurai Jack), the characters were interesting and the story was very reminiscent of old shows like Mazinger Z and Voltron. Genndy Tartarkovsky himself has said that it was the most challenging show he's ever created.
There are some great children's shows, as well. WordGirl, for instance, is a great show. It's clever, much like Phineas and Ferb, though it's material is more geared towards education. It's even won an Emmy, if I'm not mistaken. And I'm willing to bet not a lot of you know about it.
You have said, yourselves, that the show has a lot of terrible fans. Well, I'm willing to bet if these terrible fans had never existed, the show wouldn't be such a phenomenon. They do, after all, make up a large percentage of the MLP: FiM fanbase.
This isn't to say that the show isn't great, it is. But I'm sure there are plenty of great shows out there that don't receive as much appreciation as this show does, and I am POSITIVE that this unusual "hype" has something to do with it. As to where the hype came from, I'm not entirely sure. But it'd be a bit naive to think that things like art, writing and acting influenced it all that much.

I pretty much agree with this, but I wouldn't consider it inherently a bad thing. A lot of people watch the show and make jokes about it because they know a lot of other people who watch the show and make jokes about it.
It's like World of Warcraft; a lot of people play it because all their friends play it (and, of course, because it's definitely a "pretty good" game at the least)

Holivi's gallery. I've posted a lot of her stuff in this thread, so I thought, "Why not just post her deviantart?"
The majority of her works are Pony fanart, from the looks of her gallery. Which kinda throws me; she's an amazing artist. Her sense of design, her brush work and her understanding of color is incredible.
I'm not kidding. She's amazing. Like, "Holy Shit" amazing.
