Naw, I don't mind. But man, it's been four years since I last put something up there. I better make sure my next animation is something really good.

I'm sure it'll be great. Although, if in doubt, go with something your comfy with, or if all else fails, a music video is usually the way to go.

What do you mean by gestures? Like those 30-second drawings that some people do? 'Cuz I got tons of those.

I was thinking 20-30 second stuff, preferably closer to 20. I'm comfortable past 30 seconds.

My problem is that I'm too hung up on literal drawing; my 10 minute studies are decent, but my 10-20 second studies suffer.

I'd sooner steal a book than to buy it, because I am broke, and I am crazy, also.

Here's a couple of gestures I found in my stash of drawings. These were made using the website posemaniacs:

These were my two very first attempts at gesture drawing well over a year ago.

After about fifty drawings, this is what they started to look like:

I actually found that drawing the outline of the model instead of breaking it down with guidelines and shapes was not only faster, but it made it easy to figure out where certain body parts fall in relation to others.

After my 100 Bodies exercise, I started drawing like this while doodling and animating and that's what allows my sketches to look like this:

Like I said before, aside from the head of the character, I always focus on its outline, almost never using any guidelines or shapes unless the pose is really extreme.

That's interesting... I don't think I've ever tried to draw a figure without some form of a skeleton.

It's probably easier to explain if you can actually see me drawing. Try looking at these:

How I Draw 1
How I Draw 2

If it doesn't autoplay, hit the 'watch redraw' button in the upper right corner. You might need to restart the video for it to play properly.

But anyway, as you can see, it all starts when I just figure out where one side of the neck lies. It allows me to find where one shoulder falls, which allows me to find the other shoulder, which lets me sketch out the chest and stomach, then the pelvis, and so on and so forth.

And when it comes to things like arms and legs, I draw a line to help me figure out where the limb is pointing and its length, and once I got that right, I continue the line to flesh out the limb. Basically, if you can figure out where one side of the body part is, it's easy to find out where the other side is. I guess you could say I'm taking a guideline (or the skeleton, if you will) and turning it into a full shape.

God, I hope that makes sense.

Well, I tried SOMETHING like that (second-to-last post on the page), but, if I'm not mistaken, it took well over 30 seconds to draw the figures.

Actually, looking back on some of my old stuff, I'd say I have more trouble with the 10-15 second stuff, rather than 20-30.

Any tips for those?

I never tried 10-15 second gestures, unfortunately. I'll give it a try sometime soon and post what I make.
