Your top 5 games of all time! « Thread Started on Oct 29, 2012, 3:31pm »
List your favorite games ever, and give some reasons as to why you love them!
5. Resident Evil 4 (PS2) I don't usually replay single player games all that often. Oh boy was I in for a treat when I picked up RE4. I have now beaten this game about ten times! The ambiance and graphics are breathtaking, the combat is kinetic and visceral as hell, and to top it off it has the largest wealth of unlockables I've ever seen in an action shooter. It's truly the best survival horror game of all time!
4. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) Whoever said games can't be considered art obviously never played SotC! It presents one of the most engrossing worlds I've ever seen, and it does so with no dialog, minimalist sound design, and dark, grimy environments. If that is't impressive, I don't know what is. And to top it off, the boss battles themselves are some of the most memorable encounters in any game I've ever played. It's a freakin' masterpiece!
3. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2) The best Metal Gear, period. For me, anything set in the Cold War is prime entertainment material. So imagine my surprise when I was holed up in an underground bunker, fighting off a psychotic Soviet astronaut wielding a flamethrower! The pacing and story are superb, it's full of goofy little easter eggs, and the bosses...oh my god, the bosses. And plus, who doesn't like that intro music
2. Final Fantasy IX (PS) "What about Final Fantasy VII!?" you ask? To hell with that! Let me tell you, FF IX is hands down the best RPG ever made. It expertly fuses the new conventions of the franchise with the series fantasy roots. The result is a not a game, but an experience. Simple, classic combat, a meticulously woven story touching on the subject of mortality and what it means to be alive, and one of the single most gut wrenchingly beautiful love stories to ever be featured in the medium. Move over Cloud, Zidane's got a leg (and a tail) up on you this time!
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) I really don't know what to say about OoT that hasn't already been said. All I can say is that playing this game was one of the happiest experiences of my childhood. The mere idea of adventuring through the ages blew my mind. The music is legendary, the themes and plot devices are fantastic, and the horrific challenges that you must face are even more so. This is a game in it's purest form. An adventure that sucked me in, chewed me up, and spat me out with a sense of bewilderment and satisfaction. It's not only the best game ever made, but also one of the most masterfully crafted pieces of media ever conceived.

Oh. Much easier.
1. The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past You'd think, by now, that the franchise would have changed to "The Legend(s) of Zelda", considering there were more than 1 Zeldas, Links and Ganons.
2. Red Dead Redemption Don't wanna spoil anything, but the ending is pretty heartbreaking. It brings the whole story together beautifully.
3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Lotta great moments. Also, a great game overall; campaign AND multiplayer.
4. Xenogears Great battle system, I wish I could see it again in another RPG.

Not much of a writer, so you'll have to be satisfied with fairly simplistic reasons:
1. Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Mega Drive, 1994) I never get old of it. Multiple characters that play similarly yet differently, resulting in tonnes of character-specific routes, massive levels, fast speed, good graphics and bosses - just an all-around great game.
2. Rollcage: Stage II (Playstation/PC, 2000) It's fast, and you can blow stuff up and drive on walls. 'Nuff said.
3. OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast (Xbox/PS2, 2006) Nothing beats sliding sideways between two lorries at 200mph.
4. After Burner Climax (XBLA/PSN, 2010) It's fast, and you can blow stuff up and... well, fly. Both this and the above were originally arcade games, but I prefer the home ports (more content!).
5. Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3DX+ (Arcade, 2010) It's fast, and... nope, that's pretty much it. The game creates an incredible atmosphere, and it's hard to stop playing once you've started (a sign of a well-designed arcade game).
Yeah, there's a slightly noticeable pattern there. If you're really interested, here's a massive picture that shows my top 72.

1. Chrono Trigger(Snes) Ever wanted to travel through time with a badass katana? well this game takes you there, an inovated turn based Rpg truly a classic
2. Dragon Age(PS3) An Awesome Rpg with dragons and Magic, do I need to say more?
3. Skyrim(PS3)
4. Final Fantasy 6(Snes) a good old fashion turn based Rpg, in my opinion a great turning point for the series, because of this title we enjoy the final fantasies today
5. World of Warcraft(PC) A Fast paced MMORPG from blizzard, set in the Warcraft world, has more than a million current players.

5.) Mass Effect series (PC) This would be ranked much higher if it weren't for the fallout of the third game. I never expected it to be mind blowing but I could never have expected it to be so... underwhelming. Plus, the first day DLC ploy. Never really felt it since I got the collector edition, but still such a blow to most of the people that bought it regularly. Still, despite all the shortcomings, it was a great experience all the way, from start to finish.
4.) Red Dead Redemption (PS3) This game pretty much revived my hope for good sandbox games. GTA was good the first few times, but overall, it just got bland as we are introduced into a sort of different city with the same premise of just going nuts, one after the other. In this foray, we got outlaws, lawmen, bounties, wild animals. And, I don't think I've ever expressed this before, I'm a sucker for a good western and this did not disappoint in the slightest.
3.) Fallout: New Vegas (PC) Like I said, sucker for a good western. I'm sure had I played the earlier Fallout games from Interplay, they would be here in place of this game, but I missed it's heyday, the time when they were first to come out to show us a much grittier side to gaming among the more socially acceptable fair. It would have been a tie with Fallout 3 but New Vegas just gave me more drive and motivation to explore about what happened to me and the world around me since the opening scenes.
2.) Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX) A lot of people may disagree, but I loved the tactics battle system on this game. I thought it would have been perfect for LAN or online gameplay but it never happened. May be a guilty pleasure, but I loved the story all throughout. Although, it's only been fairly recently that I've begun to realize the subtle undertones of slight incest in the background but I choose to overlook it.
1.) Wild Arms (PSX) Not the type of game you'd expect to see in the number one spot, but I'm admittedly biased on this endeavor. This game was the first one that made me see games as adventures rather than just getting through level after level. Castlevania was hit every living creature then move on, Megaman (or Rockman back here) was shoot every moving creature then move on and Mario was jump on every moving creature then move on (well, most of the time). Sure they had their basic plot premise, but no... fluff. With Wild Arms, I got to thinking, hmmmmn, I wonder if that part of the world on the map is holding something secretive or if I use this move will it be more effective or question what person a's motivation for doing all this is. Laughably, me and my brother and sister tried to finish it in one sitting back when we couldn't get a memory card yet. Ah, those were the days. Never can get over the fact that the heroes are always chibi in combat while everybody else was regular size though.

Tough call when you own way too many games, but if you put a gun to my head and make me say something, then I'd probably say this:
5. Castlevania: I love me some Castlevania. Not even for any in-particular reason either! Well ok, I take that back, the soundtrack is great, the gameplay is solid and challenging... except for the occasional cheap death... and is overall a fun experience for me.
4. Goldeneye 007: As far as local multiplayer goes, not much can beat 007 to me. (Note: only true if its 4 player...) The soundtrack is catchy, and the gameplay, though flawed, is still fun. It's the kind of game I play to feel like a one man army... the same kind of feeling I imagine most CoD players have during campaign. I'll always have a soft spot for that one.
3. Megaman 2: It's an instant classic in the NES library, and easily my favorite NES game in general. The challenge, the level design, the awesome soundtrack, the flow of the game in general just feels perfect to me! It's a game I could play anytime.
2. Resident Evil 4: There's one primary thing I have to give RE4 credit for... it made the Gamecube cool! For the longest time it was my favorite game! The intense scenarios, the action movie-esc story, the freaking merchant THAT I CAN'T STOP QUOTING!!! I love RE4! Beat it at least 6 times, it doesn't get old for me! Easily my favorite game on the Gamecube. (I'm sorry Smash Bros. ... I love you!)
1. Starfox 64: This is mostly a personal thing, but the replay value on this game is priceless. It was the first game I ever played with voice actors in it, and the lines, the characters, the music, the gameplay, EVERYTHING ABOUT IT... stayed with me over the years... Whenever I beat that game, the credits roll, and I see the Starfox team fly into the sunset while the main theme plays... I tear up a little... Tears of pure joy roll down my face every time! I love this game, and is definitely my favorite game of all time.

1. Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (SFC/PS2/DS) Epic battle against evil spanning 3 generations. Now throw in the fact that you can marry one of 2 heroines in the game (3 in the DS version), some monster recruiting, and you've pretty much sold me.
2. Chrono Trigger (SNES) This needs no explanation.
3. Jet Set Radio (Dreamcast) A quirky game where you skate and tag on buildings, all while avoiding police and mobsters. Paired with its memorable soundtrack, I'm surprised I enjoyed this game as much as I do.
4. King of Fighters 98 (Neo-Geo) What I would consider to be the Original Crossover fighting game series, this installment had more characters (some with alternate versions), and 2 styles of pummeling your opponent. Surprisingly it's also one of the more balanced games I've played.
5. Mega Man 3 (NES) While most people regard Mega Man 2 as one of the best in the series, I personally have a love for the 3rd installment. Not only do you go through the usual 8 robot masters, but there's a segment before Wily's castle that you have to revisit 4 of those stages and battle drones with the same moves and abilities as those of 2, making the game longer and a bit more epic.
Honorable mentions: Final Fantasy 6, Bayonetta, Contra, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, Real Bout Fatal Fury, Melty Blood, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Pokemon, MGS3, anything by Team ICO.

5. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
3. Super Metroid
2. Star Fox 64
1. Mega Man X
Because MMX, SF64 and Rondo of Blood are arcade style games and MMX, SM and Rondo are 2D platformers and as a result very similar games in a lot of ways so.... to save on redundant critiquing of them I'll condense it to this: what these games all have in common is that they improved upon problems I've had from previous games in their respective franchises. Super Metroid, Star Fox 64 and Mega Man X in particular are damn near flawless games that have a surprising amount of depth considering how brief they are.
Super Mario Bros 2, Phoenix Wright Trilogy, Metroid Prime, Rhythm Heaven Fever, Wario Land, Devil May Cry 3, ActRaiser, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros Melee and F-Zero GX are really up there somewhere, too.

Yeeeeaaaah, I unintentionally duplicated my post when I was scrolling my mouse down while re-reading this thread. I actually do that on accident... a lot but usually I catch on and fix it before people notice.

5. Red Alert 2 (PC) This was a part of my childhood, A RTS that I loved playing for countless hours, Soviets vs. Allies heh... Oh and this game has been a huge influence to my voice, I used to mimic every unit that spoke when I was a kid all the time.
4. Baldur's Gate 2 (PC) The Amazing writing and the voice acting just blows my mind. This game also has been an influence on my voice. A very challenging action RPG DnD video game that has very awesome and memorable characters "We are all heroes; you and Boo and I. Hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice!" "Magic is impressive, but now Minsc leads! Swords for everyone!" - Minsc
3. FF7 - Crisis Core (PSP) As a person who doesn't really care for the final fantasy games, Crisis Core surprised me, I'm not really the fan of turn based rpgs though will play some at a point in time. Crisis Core is an action rpg on the psp that tells a beautiful story, The main character Zack I would say is one of the best video game characters of all time. He's well developed and his personality alters over the game for better. From being childish and stuck up to honor and help everyone out, but still keeping his other side which I really like. He does get emotional at some points in time, but it doesn't have a drastic effect on his personality. You continue through the story as one character only, discover, and find answers. I have played through all of FF 7, I have to say that the prequel was so much a better game all around.
2. Powerstone 2 (DC) OH MY GOHD. POWER STONE 2! A 3d Arcadish 4 player fighting arena game. It is unbelievably addicting and ridiculously fun, it doesn't really have any story, but it makes it all up for the chaotic gameplay. It's pretty good with just singleplayer to unlock items. But damn, 4 player is where it's at! There might be only like 8 areas to fight on due to disk space, but they are the best stages I have ever seen in a fighting game, they alter so much, like you will be chased by a boulder, or you are falling in the sky trying to grab an umbrella before the others do, or even going up a bunch of elevators to new areas. Oh, and the amount of weapons that can drop... Take about the amount brawl has and multiply it by 4. Though you must unlock weapons that can drop by going through the adventure mode (single player) I would recommend this game to anyone. oh and it has to be the dreamcast version to do the 4 player chaos. I love powerstone 2 so much I would put it above smash bros. Powerstone 1 was ok, due to the fact that you could only do 2 player, This was fixed with Powerstone 2 heh
1. Shenmue (DC) The most amazing game I have ever played, what you can do in that game even for it's time is unbelievable. This game is all about the story. How much stuff was put into this game... I was in a big town and everything was accessible, all the doors to buildings, there was a daytime system all the npc's had new lines to say each day and also if you keep on talking to them and there were like 200 of them all unique with their own personality and appearance. I felt like I was inside the game, and nobody was a hollow character. I could actually understand them, I could speak to them about other stuff I heard from some other npc which changes their dialogue and options, and maybe delve deeper, oh and there is no order on who to talk to, you could advance into the story with talking to someone else about the same subject which would change the route a bit but still lead you up to where you want to go, everything was interactable, there was just too much to explore... And for a 1999 game! it has things that even new games don't have. Well it did cause Sega to be bankrupt temporarly and fall out of the console wars, for a $70,000,000 project called Shenmue. A reason why Sega is still alive because one investor from a Japanese computer company put in a ton of money for Sega. Now I would recommend this game to anyone who loves a game for it's story, yes it does have gameplay aswell, but some would complain because there is not enough action. I do love the fighting mechanics. Shenmue is a beautiful game.
well there is my top 5 Metal Gear Solid is one of my favorite games, it would probably go as number 6 on the list Oh and most of the games on the Dreamcast are Awesome. I must say that it is my favorite console
