Male voice needed for Video Game Charact [closed]
« Thread Started on Jul 4, 2012, 6:15pm »

Thanks to all the people who sent in auditions. It's going to be a difficult decision. I'll contact the successful applicant shortly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello there,

Just found this group recently and I'm excited by all the talent that's here! I'm one of the developers of an amateur game project called The Dark Mod. It's a first person stealth game, inspired by the Thief series, which we released about two years ago. We just recently won a MODDB award for "Best Community Integration" in a mod, and have gotten positive press in PC Gamer. You can visit our webpage here: http://www.thedarkmod.com

Vocals are very important in stealth games like TDM. The player spends a lot of time hiding and observing AI characters, and listening to what they say gives important feedback to the player about how likely they are to be caught. AI mutter to themselves as they go about their nightly routines, comment about suspicious sights or sounds, and warn friends about what they've seen.

Each character has about 200 lines, though most are quite short (eg, "What's that?" or "Stop Thief!").

Some of our earlier vocal recordings are a bit on the rough side, and I would like to replace them with better quality ones. I have a few characters that I would like to find actors for, but to start with I'm looking for just one:

"The Pro" This is the default voice for professional guards in the game. The character is in his late 30s, experienced but not well educated. The Pro is confident, steely and tough. He has been a guard for a long time, and knows he’s good. He's level headed and professional. He rarely gets emotional, and his lines are delivered with cold, clear efficiency. Think Dirty Harry, Michael Ironside, or Wolverine for inspiration.

The accent for this character should be North American neutral. The Dark Mod takes place in a medieval-ish fantasy setting though, so a little bit of "rennaissance-like" inflection is desirable.

Here's a link to an example of the current version of the character. You don't have to match this exactly, but we don't want the character to sound completely different when the lines are replaced, so something in the same ballpark would be ideal. http://www.mindplaces.com/save/pro_ex.wav

Audition Lines:
==========

Relaxed, Idle: You're relaxed and going about your regular business. You aren’t expecting any trouble and may not even be on patrol at the moment. You’re talking to yourself, so lines should be muttered in a low tone of voice, and punctuated with sighs, pauses and mumbling.

“I’ll be home soon enough, with a good mug of ale and a warm fire.”
"…maybe they’ll be up for a game later tonight...”

Alerted by Something: You see or hear something that makes you think that there's someone there, but you don't know exactly who, or where they are. You don’t know for sure that there’s a threat, but you’re all business now, and your lines are directed to the mystery figure in the shadows.

to_alert3_1 “Let’s not have any trouble…come on out so I can see you.”
to_alert3_2 "Hey! Come out and identify yourself at once."

Spotted the Intruder, armed: You have come face to face with the intruder. You are pulling out your weapon and getting ready to charge. These lines are shouted to the intruder.

spotted_combat_1 "Surrender or die, villain!"
spotted_combat_2 "Ah ha! Now I've got you!"

Please send audition lines to: eric 'at' mindplaces.com

The deadline for auditions is Wed, 18th (a week from today). Lines will be needed by the end of the month.

Recording & Sending Information:
.wav format, 44100 rate, mono

I hope I've remembered to include everything; please ask if you're unsure about anything, and thanks in advance.

Just as a suggestion, for such a big project, I think you should set your deadline a little bit later.

Yes, thanks for posting. I probably should have mentioned that it is a good idea to post here just in case. Sometimes email with attachments bounce, and it appears yours might have.

I've received 3 auditions so far:

CaptainGameguy, Reno Potok and Grant Lease.

Nothing from Sypher_Blacksnow@yahoo.com though.

Aw just saw this, darn. Sour about it closing before deadline (not that I would have picked up a better mic by then anyway). Well, early congratulations to whoever got the role, I'm sure you deserve it!
