Nope. That's practically "average" (or "cheap" even) and I know of professionally done demos being much more expensive. They're expensive not just for studio time + quality, but also for the rights for the sound (music + SFX), and maybe even voice direction.

@@; I'm sure there're other reasons why they're expensive, but those are the ones I've been told thus far!

woah, hey! what about editing fade ins/outs at the beginning/end of each clip if you're doing separate takes and/or split anything at all in your session when mixing it? If you don't, you'll suffer from creating "pops" in your demo. These pops are ugly, and you'll never be scouted by any good companies if you do have em'! Especially if everyone else doesn't. >.>

The rights notion got me wondering; say you were putting a demo together, would it be advised to simply use Video CoPilot (Royalty free music available for purchase) and original scores? I notice several people use soundtrack scores in their demos, but I'm guessing that's because they're going up on newgrounds or box.net, but say you planned on putting your demo up on a site like voice123 for example, would the royalty free scores / SFX be the way to go?

@@; Yeah, I wrote this a long time ago, so I'll be sure to create another section regarding other sound stuffs (like minimizing "dead air" between different characters/voices that act as filler more than substance).

I also need to add to a few sections since I'm learning that digital files and LINKS to streamable, digital files are the way to go instead of CD's now.

Royalty free and original stuff gives you a MAJOR advantage because:

1 - Way lower risk of you getting sued
2 - Unless you're in the "real thing that uses the copyrighted music" (ex: you've actually voiced a video game character and the music from that soundtrack is playing in the background), it's kinda distracting to hear something you recognize in the background and know for SURE that this voiceover isn't in it--It's in the "impressions" vein of iconic characters, except in this case, background ambience

Example (and I'm sorry I have to use this one, but I see it too often):

Voice actress plays an original character she created. In the background is Kingdom Heart music. This character clearly isn't in Kingdom Hearts, so this just broke the suspension of disbelief, especially in the "pretending that your material is from stuff you've already done" department.

>_o; This should ALSO be in the WIP "additional sound tips" section...

Thanks for asking~

I was wondering how a, frankly, newbie voice actor such as myself would go about finding some of these voices in me, or what voices I should try to use in a reel. What lines should I read?

I ask because I know you're not supposed to just go "Oh, this is my ___ voice". (As stated above)

You're supposed to give your voices character in their own right. But where would I find the lines to read? Or should I write them myself? But then, what would I even write?

This is a complicated question to ask, I hope I'm making sense, even though I know I'm not. I know what I MEAN though, so I hope someone is getting the gist of this lunacy.

This is a very good thread for anyone wanting to make a demo reel and all but I have to ask, what mic should I use for VAing. Sorry if my grammar isn't good or anything.
