Unplugging a condenser microphone with phantom power on is a common way of damaging a condenser. Never unplug the microphone without turning off the phantom power.

I... feel really stupid. I've used my mic for a couple years now without knowing this, it's a wonder I haven't fried it. Thank you!

This was very educational! :D Though what's the difference between a Mic Type and a Mic Pickup Pattern? Like, is a condenser automatically uni-directional? Or are there condensers for every type of pickup pattern?

Different mics have different pickup patterns. There are condensers that have switchable patterns, as well. For example, the AKG C414 can be cardioid, hypercardioid, omni, or figure-8.

Mic type (if you're referring to condensers vs. dynamics) denotes the method of transduction a mic uses to convert sound to voltage. Condensers use capacitors, dynamics and ribbons use moving coils (and are typically less sensitive as a result).

UPDATE 10/8/12: After an ETERNITY, I've finally followed through on something in my life and finished this guide and added the promised additional information. For those who have already read it, I've also gone through and revised/supplemented the first half with knowledge I've picked up in the past two years. Thanks for reading, and seriously...thanks for the patience.
